Everyone has a first love. And everyone knows that no matter who that special someone may be, they will always be of importance to you. Don’t kid yourself, you know you’ve already thought of who he is. He is forefront in your mind’s eye at this very moment.

And I’m right there with you.

I will never forget the day we first met. He was the most perfect gentleman a girl could ask for, and my sixteen-year-old self was a total goner.

He was everything I ever wanted in a man.

He was the kind of man that always held the door open for you, without being pushy about it or making a big fuss. I found myself falling head over heels through every single door frame He showed me.

He had the kind of hands that were strong yet gentle. I knew He could carry anything and everything I gave Him, and I found myself slipping my tiny hands into His strong, sure ones on an instinct. He could lead me through battle, and the next minute wipe the tears from my face.

He had the kind of eyes that looked all the way into you. You knew He was listening, and you knew He saw every part of you. And though I could never truly pinpoint the exact color they were, I found myself slowly but surely losing myself in His gaze. I could’ve stared at Him forever.

He had the kind of spirit that was strong and mighty, yet tender and merciful. He was brave and courageous, and yet forgave you in an instant if you did Him wrong.

He had the kind of heart that was honest, true, and noble. He was committed to me, and I to Him. He loved me purely with every beat of His precious heart, and I found myself opening my heart to Him in vulnerability and intimacy more and more every day.

He was thoughtful. He was intentional. He was selfless. He was a friend and a companion. He was a lover, and a romancer. He was everything to me, and He was enough.

He was no ordinary man.

He was true-God and true-man.

I want you to reread the beginning of this article, and read it from this perspective: the most perfect gentleman is Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the man who opens the doors of life to you and guides you in making decisions. Trust that He will continue to be a gentleman, and open the doors for you that you need right now. Jesus is the man who holds your every need in His capable and manly hands. Trust Him with your heart, and let go. Jesus is the man that looks upon you with the gaze of most pure and intense love. Let Him look at you and love you. He is the man who loves you completely, always, and unchanging.

He is the most perfect gentleman a girl could have.

I happened to meet Him at a youth conference when I was 16. And my life has never been the same.

So, I challenge you to think back on that time when you first met Jesus. Who was He to you then, and how have you possibly lost sight of that over time? Have you forgotten that He is a gentleman? Let Him love you, and let Him be the gentleman that He is.

Invite Him back to the throne of your heart.
